La Cathédrale Oubliée [The Forgotten Cathedral]
Escaparium Laval
Escape room

This is a must-play. It would be worth going to Montreal just to play this game (but of course it is worth going to Montreal for many reasons). This is the closest I have ever been to feeling like I was in a movie. The integration of the puzzles with the scenery and the story is impeccable. You go from one jaw-dropping moment to another but always feel like it is your actions as a team that are causing the story to move forward. I can’t recommend this highly enough.
L'Île perdue de la Reine Vaudou [The Lost Island of the Voodoo Queen]
Escaparium Laval

Tremendously entertaining from start to finish, although a few of the puzzles are clunky (not unsolvable, just not as clean as they could be). The game master / actor was brilliant and reacted in character to all of our bad jokes. The sets and special effects are simply spectacular. Highly recommended.

I don’t know what you can say about this room other than just go play it and really lean in when it starts taking unexpected turns. Go in spoiler-free if at all possible. One of the most innovative games I’ve ever seen.

This was one of my favorite rooms in Montreal, although in the interest of full disclosure it was polarizing for our group as a whole. The core concept is that there is precisely one perfect sequence of steps to solve this room and if you make a mistake you have to start over. (In reality it is a bit more forgiving than that — there are only a few ways to “fail” — but the failures do seem front-loaded, so the first few times through the cycle it might feel like you are being punished for something that you don’t understand. My advice is to just lean in and you will get on the right track.) If time permits ask the GM to show you how the reset mechanic really works after the game is over. It’s not something that is hard to figure out, but the level of investment required by the operator to pull it off is impressive. For me, this is the best “loop” room I’ve played. Highly recommended.

They call it an “interactive experience” and they are not kidding. Really extraordinary in every way — sets, props, location, live (and, uh, not-so-alive) actors, story — this is a must-play.
Titkos Metró [Secret Subway]
TRAP Escaperoom | E-Exit

Very interesting game with some clever mechanics. Modern design with all the puzzles fully integrated into the game environment. Excellent GM support (and the game itself is mostly language-independent). Definitely deserves its spot among the top games in Budapest.
Az Escobar Ház [House Of Escobar]
Locked Room Aroom Budapest
Escape room

I was struck by the uniqueness of this game’s theme (I’ve certainly not seen another “Pablo Escobar” room) and it absolutely delivers — great set with a surprising number of different areas to explore. Linear gameplay and one steep narrow staircase make this game best with a small number of players, but there are some excellent puzzles and everything is thematically appropriate. Highly recommended.
Nautilus
Project: Escape

This is probably my favorite room at Project: Escape. The set design is gorgeous and there are a lot of excellent props and puzzles. Their GMs do a great job as well. This theme is fairly standard now, but to my recollection this was the first submarine themed game in the Atlanta area and at the time we played it we found the game to be quite innovative. The story is interesting. Recommended.
Metró [Metro]
Locked Room Aroom Budapest

Solid room with a great set. A bit on the easy side and the ending is abrupt, but there are some nice puzzles (other than a really finicky directional lock, not that there is any other kind of directional lock). Recommended, but really there’s not enough to do for more than 2 players.

A fun variation on the “disaster in space” theme with excellent use of a variety of methods for revealing hidden information that actually does kind of feel like you are saving the day with SCIENCE! Excellent English translations of both written and audio materials, so we had no language issues. Game master was also very helpful. Worth a visit to play both games at this location.
