The year is 1972 and Summerhall is home to The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. Advancements in animal medicine have never been so progressive and revolutionary with record breaking numbers of animal organ transplants. Whilst students learn how to perform canine dentistry and the difference between a fur-ball and a swollen lymph gland, a secretive lab at Summerhall is created. The lab known as the Kensie Research Lab or the ‘Secret Lab’ was a marvel of the 70’s with technology that no dog could ever imagine. It contained the very best equipment money could buy and a group of scientists whose work would go down in history. The genius in charge of the lab was Dr. Elsie Kensie, a brilliant bio-scientist, specialising in domestic animals. Her experiments were groundbreaking, her ideas were radical but not everything played out how she hoped. Do you have what it takes to discover the secrets that she was working on and help save the pets of the world?

The Secret Lab was delightful. It was fast-paced and engaging with a great mix of puzzles and several very satisfying moments. There were a few specific puzzles that were unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere, and overall there was a ton of variety in what we were asked to do. They made excellent use of a space with a very unique history. Our GM was excellent - friendly and accommodating and clearly paying attention to our gameplay - and the mechanism for delivering clues to players was a real joy.

Olivia was a great GM. She was enthusiastic and really matched our energy, and was happy to spend a bunch of time debriefing with us after the game. She was obviously proud of Locked in Edinburgh's rooms (rightfully so) and we appreciated getting to see a little of the inside scoop.

Locked in Edinburgh is in the back of Summerhall with fairly poor signage. There's a short video on the "Contact" page of the website, but we were running late for our first game and a little panicked and couldn't find it and ended up needing to be rescued by our GM.

I have played this game twice and managed to work on different puzzles both times, that just shows how much there is in this game! Both times, I played in a team of 6 people (different teams both times), the max number is 10 which I would only recommend for less experienced players.

The Summerhall building is an old veterinarian school so the Secret Lab has some very nice set design that is actually just part of the old building design, atmospheric lighting and a cool clue system.

Editorial

  • It feels fun and the puzzles are each themed to match the lab...manages to be...tense and amusing.
