Ghost Patrol
Trivium Games
Escape room
IRL
Definitely play Ghost Patrol! It’s one of the rare escape rooms that you can spend all night talking about after you’ve done it. First of all, our Game Master was great and the Intro to the Game is really well done. The set design is outstanding, and the environments change enough in the progression of the game to keep it interesting. Where this escape room shines for me was the puzzles though. From the first puzzle you get a direct tie-in to the story, and each puzzle makes sense in the environment. We also never felt lost and always knew what the next step would be, which speaks for great game design. In the end, Ghost Patrol doesn’t do anything phenomenally new, but everything it does is done to perfection. The sound design, the lights, the puzzles, and the story all work together so so well. The only “complaint” I’d have is that the game is listed on the website as minimum 4 players. I think enthusiasts should play it with 2-4 players, as it’s doable in the time limit, and you’ll get to experience all the puzzles yourself!
Moriarty's Manor
MindFox Escape
Escape room
IRL
I’m glad that we played Moriarty’s Manor, as we almost skipped it for being another Sherlock themed game. However, we were pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed our game! The puzzles were the highlight for me, as they are challenging but you never feel lost. You always have a sense of almost being at the solution, you just need to think a bit harder, and once you solve the puzzle it just feels really satisfying. The diversity in the puzzles was also great. There was one part of the game were some outside knowledge is required, however everyone that’s slightly familiar with Sherlock won’t have any problems. The quite big game also looks nice, nothing too out of the ordinary but well done. Our hosts were also very friendly and it is, so far, the only room where we were met with applause upon escaping =)
Lab Rat
Hatch Escapes - LA
Escape room
IRL
We definitely enjoyed Lab Rat! Our game host was very friendly, and you can even get some free coffee in the lobby!! In the game itself we enjoyed the story and the weirdness of the experience, it is definitely something special. We loved some of the puzzles, but there were also one or two that we didn’t enjoy quite as much as the solution felt a bit far fetched and is definitely harder to get for non native English speakers. I think we definitely hyped up our expectations considering all the awesome reviews and awards this game has received, and were slightly let down with the game, especially the look of the game itself. You can definitely tell that this game has been open for a while, and some of the rooms toward the end of the game kind of drop the great theme of being a trapped rat. We loved how the game played with size, making you feel smaller like an actual rat, but later in the game you encounter some rooms that are “human” sized again, without there really being a reason for that in the story. I would still encourage everyone to check out this game, but try to not get too excited about it before hand to avoid being disappointed. It was still a lot of fun and definitely a stand out game. For enthusiasts I would recommend to go with no more than 4 players.
Going Underground
Crime Runners - Branch Alser Strasse
Escape room
IRL
This game keeps you on your toes from start to finish, and is one of the best games out there when it comes to storytelling. What Going Underground excels at is the story, you never know quite what to expect next, and there’s more than one twist along the way. The set is really immersive and the changes of scenery keep everything fresh. There’s some great tech involved not only in the puzzles, but also in how the environment changes as you progress in the game. The puzzles are fun to solve, except maybe the last puzzle (I can see it being either fun or very frustrating depending on the team). I would recommend for enthusiasts to only take a small group though, no more than 4, as the puzzles are on the easier side and you’ll want to do everything yourself ;)
The Neighbor
Steal and Escape
Escape room
IRL
We thoroughly enjoyed our game, as it surprised us with some things we haven’t seen in any other escape rooms before. The story is on the simpler side, as in the end goal is easily understood. That said, the game manages to add real depth to the story with loads of information that can be discovered as you progress, and with an authentic feeling environment. The way you can interact with the game is genius, and by the end of the game you feel like you almost have a bond with the main character of the game. The puzzles are pretty solid, and especially in the last parts of the game become great, with really cool usage of tech that we haven’t seen anywhere else. If you’re around San Diego I’d definitely recommend to play this game!
Chapter 4: The Courtyard
The Basement : A Live Escape Room Experience
Escape room
IRL
If you can only play one game at The Basement, this would be it. It takes all the best aspects of the other games and makes for a great all round experience! What we loved most was the very immersive set, you really feel transported to a different place. The actor interactions are brilliant, and The Basement is really the best at integrating actors in the puzzles, making them part of the solutions of some of the tasks. Our actor was also really talented! The puzzles are fun overall, with the ones that involve the actor definitely being the highlight. We enjoyed that the puzzles made good use of the environment, and they were mostly tied in with the story.
Red Giant
Quest Room - Hollywood
Escape room
IRL
We had mixed feelings about this game, and with the great games available in LA I wouldn’t recommend playing this one. The Good: the game looks very pretty and has some cool effects, and has a memorable ending! The Bad: the puzzles aren’t the best, and while they fit in thematically, they don’t really further the story. Some of the solutions feel a bit far fetched. Unfortunately one of the more technical puzzles didn’t work in our game. Our Game Master also seemed stressed, and thus didn’t have much time to spend with our group, so the experience felt quite rushed.
The Pharaoh's Lost Relic
Hour to Midnight
Escape room
IRL
We really enjoyed this game, as it has great riddles and some big props and set with impressive effects. There’s a nice progression from space to space to keep the game engaging, and encapsulates the Egyptian theme nicely without falling into the common tropes many other Egyptian themed games have. The hints are also given in character which is a lot of fun, sadly we only realised towards the end of the game, so definitely ask for hints ;) I would recommend playing with two people for a challenge, however the space is definitely big enough to play as a team of 6.
Chapter 2: The Elevator Shaft
The Basement : A Live Escape Room Experience
Escape room
IRL
The Elevator Shaft excels at creating a very immersive atmosphere, with great effects and a very real looking environment. The puzzles are solid, and with only 2 players it definitely challenges your communication skills. I would recommend playing with only 2 or 3 players though, as the game isn’t too difficult and I think it would get too crowded otherwise and there will be players with nothing left to do.
Mumifiziert [Mummified]
Open The Door Vienna
Escape room
IRL
One of my favourite games ever! The game uses its very small footprint brilliantly, and the fact that it’s designed for exactly two players makes for a great experience. The story and atmosphere of the room are great, make sense and there’s even an unexpected twist along the way. The space is very small, and filled with puzzles, but still flows really well, which speaks volume for the game design. We loved that the puzzles really force you to work and communicate well with your partner. It never becomes boring for one of you as the other is solving something, as you’re always solving things together. Our host was also very nice, and even remembered our names for giving clear hints =) We’ll definitely come back every time we’re in Vienna!
