Mansion Murder

Overall, it was an enjoyable room to play. However, there were a few flaws that were distracting from the experience.

First of all, the atmosphere was very fitting for the story that was established. The room puts you into the position of Robert Montgomerie, who has to solve the mystery of his grandfather’s murder. However, because you are the next heir to inherit the wealth, you seem like the one who has most likely have done it.

Some of the puzzles relate to the story at hand and tie into some of the characters in the story. One of them was the par score, showing the feud between some of the family members. However, some of them are just riddles on paper that require nothing of the room itself in order to solve. They also don’t relate to any of the themes or story elements of the room either, so it’s almost like you’re solving riddles in a decorated room rather than solving puzzles that are in the room. 

There are also elements that should have been built in place rather than the user rebuilding it. Halfway through there are two clocks. One of them is unscrewed from the wall and one is onto the wall. There is no indication of where to begin the translation, and figuring out what is the correct direction of the loose clock was confusing. The indicators on the wall were faded white dots, so we lost a few minutes over mechanical issues. There was also a wallpaper full of books. We weren’t sure if it was just for aesthetic purposes or for a puzzle until we required a clue. The clue part of the books themselves was also hard to read overall. I think real books would have brought more attention to themselves. 

Our game guide gave fantastic clues and didn’t penalize us too hard over any extra clue limits. The escape rate is 5%, but I feel that was due to the quantity and technical issues rather than complexity of any of the puzzles. I would recommend this room to people who want a challenge but are not hoping for an escape overall.
