On January 24th, 1964, The Preston Police department received a call at 23:40. The caller said it had heard loud gunshots coming from their neighbours house. Police quickly arrived at the Jenkins Family home and found all members dead, each one in a different room. Police also found a 3-page ransom note that was on the dining table asking for money in return for Emmie. Police interrogated anyone with connections to the family, but no one knew of anyone named “Emmie”. Did the father, mother and daughter write the ransom notes? What happened the night of the murders? was anyone else present that night? and who is Emmie?

Mixed in with a spooky atmosphere and a few good puzzles was a clunky interface and a lot of frustration. Several puzzles were miserable to solve because of how it was set up. The way the experience operates is to take 5 minutes away if you use a clue and 10 minutes away if you get the answer. Which meant if you needed both for something, you lost 15 minutes. I would have understood a minute or two of lost time but it felt so punitive. I probably lost more time using clues than I spent solving stuff. It stinks because some of it was fun.

The plot/theme was loose. However, to feed escapist addiction for new rooms, this is a must try. My belief is online, take home and augmented reality escape rooms will become the norm eventually. The cost of putting a family of 4 into an escape room is cost prohibitive. So the logical step for wider appeal is online and VR.
