Much like the Indiana Jones game from the same company, Star Trek Cryptic is an escape room style game. It uses the theme of the popular sci-fi franchise, however, I couldn’t even tell you who the characters are or what series is based on. As it turns out, it’s an original story, which may disappoint or please fans, depending on what they’re looking for. Moving on to gameplay, puzzles are presented through a mixture of cardboard materials and a logbook that includes all 3 puzzle adventures. Some are very standard paper puzzles, but there are others that cleverly use items like the neat gadget, the tricorder, which should resonate with fans. The best puzzles are those that are outside the box and not just a paper riddle. There are also sequences where you have to draw pathways using clear sheets and markers. These aren’t really fun, and we kind of just fudge it. But it’s probably a cute thing for families with younger kids to play around with. You can grade yourself or use hints using merit coins, but this works just as well as a casually paced escape game for fun at home. The materials are nice quality, as I usually expect from Funko Games. Although it doesn’t reach the same highs as in-person escape rooms or even EXIT games, this and the Indiana Jones Cryptic Games are fun takes on licensed IP.
