Chinatown

This game had its hits and misses. It has good reviews but it was our least favorite of the four games at Quicksand. There were a couple of puzzles that didn’t connect with us. There is no background sounds or music which makes the game feel a bit stale. On the other hand, there were a couple of puzzles we really liked and the set design was pretty good. Unfortunately, worn locks and nothing to take notes on is common with the rooms here. If playing this room, I suggest you have four players.

This was an excellent room that makes good use of space. Theming was very good but not necessarily the highest production value that I’ve ever seen. Earlier generation room with mostly locks, but I still fully appreciate the care and detail put into this room! The puzzles were great and some challenging but still doable. I can see less experienced escapers struggling with some parts or needing hints. We had a group of 4 (which seems like a solid number) and escaped without hints in just under 50min.

We did the Chinatown room last week. Was my 50th escape room. The theme was a Chinese restaurant as a cover for a drug-smuggling ring. The theme was clever enough, but the puzzles were not. Most everything else is pretty first gen. In the first few clues alone you're trying to get combos for four four-digit locks. If you're looking for a good escape room in San Diego, I recommend Fogmore Manor, or a little further north in Oceanside, Chocolate Factory is really good. EDIT: After my previous review, the owners very respectfully reached out to me to address some of the concerns I had with the room. Specifically, my last review contained a minor spoiler (with appropriate spoiler alert), and the owners have added a clue to the room to make the experience more cohesive. So I removed the reference to that part of my experience. Good for the owners for being responsive (and not defensive) about constructive criticism.

Chinatown was a fun room despite our failure. It had many clever tasks I haven’t encountered before. We had a group of seven novice players ranging in age from 8 to 77. We received a few hints but still had about four tasks uncompleted when time expired. (Fyi, the group of four before us also failed…). Nothing scary.

We failed with seven novice players of various ages. I've played every room at Quicksand, and I would say this was the trickiest as it was the only one I couldn't escape. Fun puzzles, I would recommend it for larger or more advanced groups.

This is a solid game with fun theming and some creative puzzles. Definitely a few frustrating moments, but overall an enjoyable experience.

Some good theming, puzzles were pretty standard. Overall fun room but the Diner was more immersive.

The room was well decorated and all the puzzles were clearly visible!
