Mark as done to rate

As a prisoner deep under the Colosseum, you await your turn in battle. Spartacus was once imprisoned in the very cells you currently occupy, and he managed to escape. To help others follow his path to freedom, he left a series of clues and challenges showing the way but made them clever enough so the guards couldn’t follow his path. Studying the timing of the guard patrols, you realize you have a 120-minute window with which to make your escape or face the uncertainty of the arena against tested gladiators. Get ready for a unique adventure like no other! You will work your way through multiple distinct rooms under the Colosseum, working together with your fellow prisoners – and maybe a little help from unsuspected allies – finding clues and solving puzzles in your effort to Escape the Colosseum! May the Gods of Rome have mercy on you and bless your path to escape! Escape the Colosseum is one of the longest escape adventures in the world at up to 120 minutes. The attention to detail makes this a deeply immersive experience and you truly feel like you have been transported 2,000 years into the past. If the ancient Romans didn’t use a Master Lock or modern tool, you won’t find them in this period themed experience! Veni, Vidi, Vici

This game was immersive and well themed. There were a couple puzzles that hadn’t been put back together when we got in the rooms so we spent some time “solving” for something that was already open. It was incredibly hard to hear the clues they were giving as the speaker was very distorted however they were quick with responding and their clues did help. All in all it was a good game and the couple of hiccups didn’t keep us from having a good time.

You have to crawl through a tunnel that could be difficult for someone with claustrophobia issues I do believe they have a work around if necessary

Parking

Medium

Expensive!! Being located downtown parking lot right next to the building has parking hours when you have to pay more. For example if you park until 6pm it is $15. However if it will be slightly later (say you would be done at 6:05pm) you would need to pay $25 to park overnight. We found a cheaper lot but just figure that into your cost.

Outstanding, cinematic even, so WELL done 90 Min. Completely immersive with only time-specific locks and puzzles. An amazing narrative is woven throughout with an innovative hint system. Was just jaw-dropping for downtown Tampa, in a dept. building. Great variety and a really all-encompassing theme.

31 escape rooms

The more rooms I've done, the more I've realized this wasn't very good. A corporate, mass-produced version of an escape room for team-building -- not enthusiasts. Plus, the two-hour time limit is bizarre and way too long for an easy, uninterestingly designed room.

Gameplay

Awkward pacing, weird time limits in each sub-room, clunky and corporate

Atmosphere

Cheap, feels like a chain

25 escape rooms

Overall we really enjoyed our time inside the colosseum, the theming was clever and the lengths that they went to perfect the atmosphere was top notch. The biggest killer was how many puzzle pieces were broken within the separate rooms, their mix system was also not the best, so asking for clues was basically useless. I would definitely return to play with the Great Escape again, but my hope would be that so many integral pieces are not malfunctioning.

Gameplay

The gameplay was fun! My team and I loved playing puzzle-based rooms that focus more on scavenging than lock-picking.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere was good as well, though the low lighting was cumbersome at times, it loaned itself to making you feel like you were moving your way through a real Roman colosseum.

Customer service

The entire staff at Great Escape were absolutely fantastic.

Particularly interesting or different

Yes

We had never played a room like this one before.

Story

Difficulty

Medium

Even though this is considered one of their harder rooms, slotting you two hours of completion time, it actually wasn’t that difficult once you got into the groove of things. The biggest problem we ran into is how many puzzle aspects of the room were broken.

Game tech

High tech

There were lots of trigger mechanisms that furthered your progress.

Ideal number of players

4

I would say four is a pretty ideal number, although this is one of their bigger rooms and would be accommodating for a larger group.

Scary

Not scary

Minimum age

10

There is a part where you remove a severed head from a box and some violent aspects that go hand-in-hand with the time period and probably would not be suitable for little kids.

Was anything broken?

Yes

There were lots of things that had malfunctioned in rooms 2 and 4- the locker boxes in room 2, the codex cylinder that you’re provided with when you enter, and the bathhouse pay box outside of the door to the third room. In the final room, the crypt. There was a delay in the stone crypt box opening so that we could retrieve our next puzzle, and the final door that lets you out of the room also was not working and we had to be let out manually by an employee. There wasn’t anything technically broken in the third room, but the pipes that are used for the puzzle wall were severely chipped at the ends which made some of them harder to insert in order to complete the puzzle.

Live actors

No

Physically active

Somewhat

There is a tunnel that you have to crawl through in order to reach the crypt.

Accessibility

If you are visually impaired, the low lighting will not be your friend. And if you have any mobility issues, the tunnel may pose a problem, but there is a work around!

Easy to find location

Yes

Sort of, we found it eventually, but it was in a weird part of downtown tampa, with not a very big sign to designate it. You also have to use a call box to be rung up into the building- be mindful that the elevator that takes you up to the actual lobby is VERY small, 6 passengers max at a time.

Parking

Limited

Parking in downtown tampa will never not be limited- the best method, park at the Poe garage across from the Straz and get your steps in and just walk there.

38 escape rooms

I’ve done longer escape rooms before and they were worth every penny. The challenges were plentiful and difficult, keeping you occupied. I hate the 30 minute time limit on each room regardless of how long you have left. Game master didn’t know where we were when we asked for a clue. It took us half of the 90 minutes. Had to pay for parking, way too expensive for the product in my opinion. I would list it as an hour long, regular run of the mill escape room.

Gameplay

Gameplay was fun. Cool puzzles.

Atmosphere

Decorations were great.

Customer service

Staff didn’t really seem to care that we were there. The person at the desk stated they haven’t done more than 3 escape rooms.

It was a great time! Disappointed we got out with 57 minutes to spare… for $50 and a 2 hr room, I expected it to be harder. Other than that, it was set up well!!! We enjoyed it!

You have to pay for parking which is pretty irritating since you spend over $50 for the room. We paid $11 for 0-6 hrs of parking

The puzzles were fun and interesting! There were a few things in the game that were broken but the guide was amazing and helped us through it. Crawling is involved which isn’t my favorite but the concepts and story line were interesting!
