Bitter Sweet
Locked In Glasgow
Escape room
IRL
Got off to a bit of a slow start in this one with just two players as we got split up, but once we were into the main bit of the game there was only one point where we got stuck. That section was a little frustrating as it was more of a dexterity/aiming test rather than an actual puzzle, personally I’m not a big fan of challenges that have to be completed through some sort of physical element rather than by logic. Other than that it was a game that looked very cool, pretty atmospheric and had some nice puzzles.
Bunker
Fox in a Box London
Escape room
IRL
This was a frustrating experience, the clue system at Fox in a Box is not one that I like. Once you get a clue, you must wait 10 minutes before you can ask for another and the clues just come through on a TV screen so there is no verbal contact with the GM. This meant that we spent far too long on a puzzle that we had found an answer for that logically was correct but an element in the room was wrong so our answer was wrong. If the clue system was better and teams were able to have a back and forth with the GM then this experience would have been much better and we would have escaped on time. The puzzles in the game, at least the ones that weren’t broken, were actually quite good and the set was nice. My experience was about 2 years ago so perhaps the clue system has improved since and if that is the case then I could see this being a decent room.
Going For Gold
Padlox Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
The staff were amazing, our host Kaz really got into character and gave us great clues when we got a bit stuck. The theme was very unique and the room looked great. They have obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the game and super excited that they opened another room!
Jail Break
Stirling Old Town Jail
Escape room
IRL
This game seems like it means well and is trying to be good but it’s a wee bit tacked on to the Old Town Jail. I’m sure for people visiting the jail and the escape room as a package or those who book it spur of the moment while at the jail, who are not so escape room experienced, it’s a nice time. However, for us, we managed to complete it in around 30 minutes (annoyingly I don’t seem to have made a note of our time, but the GM said it was the best time she’d seen). We also managed to skip over two or three puzzles (which we were allowed to play through after got to the end of the game) because it seemed logical to us to link some elements together through details in the room that were obviously linked, but apparently we got there too early and should have taken a roundabout way there via some other puzzles! Not a difficult game by any means, but interesting to play if you’re visiting the jail.
Magician's Heist
Eeek Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
We had visited Eeek at their site in Linlithgow a few years ago and had a brilliant time, so we were very excited to see their new Glasgow site open. Magician’s Heist might be one of my favourite escape games ever, the theming was immersive, the puzzles were original, there was even an interesting way of entering the room! You can tell that a lot of love has gone into the rooms at Eeek, the rooms look amazing, all of the puzzles and units in the room are well crafted, even the clues that we were given were themed beautifully.
Misery
Escape Reality Glasgow
Escape room
IRL
Not the strongest game at Escape Reality, escaped in just over 30 minutes and it only took that long because some puzzles were not well signposted or logical. Feels like there should be more puzzles and better signposting, but would give them the benefit of the doubt as I played in 2017 and it may have improved since then.
Museum Heist
Escape Livingston
Escape room
IRL
Pretty immersive and atmospheric, especially towards the end of the game! Puzzles weren’t too tricky but not super easy either, some nice tech elements included. Staff were great, really friendly and helpful.
Mystery and Moonshine
Divergent Games Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
We got an in-character introduction to the story which was very cool, some great acting and a great accent! The game itself looked very good, just like a PI’s office, the music was well themed and the puzzles were tricky but not too tricky. There are also some very cool tech elements/surprises, no spoilers here though! We did need a couple of hints along the way but managed to escape in time.
Operation Spellbound
Can You Escape?
Escape room
IRL
Really liked this game, it’s just a one room space but packs a lot in. GM was great giving clues in character, gave a few helpful nudges when we got a bit stuck. Non-linear game which I always like better, meant that we could work on things simultaneously or try a different puzzle when we were stuck on something. Merlin vs Morgana theme with 2 identical rooms, I played just myself and 1 other player so didn’t experience their race game but would be great for those with a larger, competitive group.
Philosopher's Stone
Game Over Escape Rooms - Edinburgh
Escape room
IRL
This is probably a nice game for beginners, there are some nice tech elements but a very small number of puzzles (7 in total, by my count). The games at Game Over feel a lot like style over substance, the set looks amazing and it’s quite atmospheric but the puzzles are not complex. Wouldn’t recommend for enthusiasts, pricing for the games are high in comparison to other Edinburgh escape companies and definitely not worth the high price.
